Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Larimer Humane Society! As an independent nonprofit organization, we rely on volunteers to help with virtually every aspect of our organization from providing daily care, exercise, and enrichment for the animals to assisting with pet adoptions, events and mailings. Our volunteers also help us educate the public on Larimer Humane Society's programs and services at community events, assist us with humane education presentations and more!

Whether you're interested in simply spending quality time with homeless animals or want to learn valuable hands-on skills, Larimer Humane Society’s volunteer program can accommodate your interests. Your time is a valuable gift, and just a few hours a week can and will make an incredible difference in the lives of homeless animals.

• Please note that most shelter volunteer positions require a minimum of two-hours of service per week. Please check the volunteer position descriptions for age and time requirements.

• Volunteer Age Requirements:
  • Volunteers between the ages of 10-15 are eligible to join our "Partner Up Program." Partner-Up teams consist of at least one adult (parent, guardian or trusted family friend) age 18 years or over and the child. Adult and child volunteer together.
  • Beginning at age 16, children may volunteer independently at the shelter in select departments without a parent or guardian. 
  • We’re sorry, but due to the nature of our services, children under 10 years of age are not allowed to volunteer at the animal shelter. Children may participate by providing foster care to an animal if an adult age 18 years or over joins the Foster Care program.

Step 2:  Clear your calendar to attend an orientation

Please mark your calendar to attend one of our upcoming volunteer orientations. Space is limited to 55 prospective volunteers at each session. We do not take a waiting list. Registration opens approximately one month prior to each orientation. If you are registering as a Partner-Up team, the parent/guardian and child must register separately.

At each volunteer orientation we provide an overview of Larimer Humane Society's programs and services, answer frequently asked questions about our shelter, review available volunteer opportunities, and provide a shelter tour.

Step 3:  Interview

After attending one of our volunteer orientations, prospective volunteers will be invited to interview with one of our department supervisors to discuss personal goals, daily responsibilities, and whether or not the position is a proper fit for the volunteer depending on availability and interests. Additional information regarding the interview process will be provide at the orientation.
 

Step 4: Attend Volunteer Animal Training (VAT)

Each prospective volunteer is required to attend Larimer Humane Society's Volunteer Animal Training (VAT). At each volunteer animal training, we review shelter safety procedures, teach our volunteers how to read animals' body language, and how to properly handle animals within a shelter environment.  Additional information on the volunteer animal training (VAT) will be provided at orientation.
